American Cocker Spaniel Training

Cocker Spaniel TrainingAs can be expected in the dog world, there are upsides and downsides to American Cocker Spaniel training.  On one hand, the breed is an intelligent one with fast pick-up of the commands being taught by its human handlers.  On the other hand, it has a potential for many training-related problems like excessive barking, submissive urination and most annoyingly, a greater predisposition to separation anxiety.

The good news is that it is possible to work around these limitations so as to make the Cocker Spaniel a well-behaved member of the family.  The following are a few of the training needs that your Cocker Spaniel will need at one point or another.  While a few can be done in the home by yourself, others will require expert professional help when personal dog training skills are being challenged.

Crate Training

Beginning at 2 months of age, the Cocker Spaniel puppy must be trained in using the crate.  Take note that a puppy must not be taken away from its mother before 8 weeks so as to lessen the possibilities for behavioural issues like separation anxiety.  Plus, it helps to keep the puppy beside its mother so that the former can also be taught about normal dog behaviour by the latter, especially about not soiling the place where one sleeps.

You will find that American Cocker Spaniel training is easier when it is started at the age of 2 months.  The crate is the starting point for many reasons – it represents the safety and security of a warm burrow as well as the place where one learns to control bladder and bowel movement.  Again, the puppy will not soil what it considers as its sleeping quarters, courtesy of its mother.

The crate is also a great way to provide a place of peace and quiet for your puppy.  Many puppies will even go to its crate to escape the chaos of the household!  And of course, you can use the crate for easy, safe and fast transportation of the puppy from one place to the next, say, from the house to the vet’s clinic.

Obedience Training

Respect for the leader of the pack is a lesson that every dog must learn as soon as possible.  Thus, proper American Cocker Spaniel training includes respect – or obedience, as it is more commonly called – training in which the dog learns to recognize and to follow the directions of the master of the household – you, of course.

Usually, obedience training can be done at home although the expert assistance of a professional trainer can also be applied.  Your dog will be taught to follow certain commands like “Come”, “Sit” and “Heel”, to name a few, as well as being introduced to the all-important concept of leader-follower.  You will be learning how to communicate with your dog, which is a very important aspect of the relationship.

Indeed, the benefits of American Cocker Spaniel training are well worth conquering the many challenges that came with the task.  Just keep at it and your efforts will be rewarded with a well-behaved American Cocker Spaniel worthy of being called a beloved member of your home.
